If you’ve recently moved or have a basement filled with boxes, put some to use by making your cat a house out of a box. It’s a fun, easy, and inexpensive project that almost anyone can do. Get the kids involved and make it a family project. Cats love boxes, so your pet is sure to appreciate the effort.

Materials you’ll need

  • A box cutter
  • A moving box
  • Tape
  • Glue gun
  • Paint and other decorations
  • Two boxes for each house
  • A ruler
  • Hanging toy {optional}

Getting started

  1. Tape the bottom of one box so it remains closed.
  2. Use a ruler to cut the top front and back of the box into a triangular shape to form the roof.
  3. Fold a small piece of each triangle down.
  4. Cut a flap from the second box.
  5. Glue the cut flap to the folded down area of the first box. This makes the flat part of the roof.
  6. Use tape to tape the rest of the flap down to the roof.
  7. Make doors and windows by cutting them out with the box cutter.
  8. Poke a small hole in the roof to hang a toy from.

Get creative

Use paint, markers, and decorations to personalize your cat’s new home. This is an excellent time to get the children involved. Make the house as plain or as fancy as you like. If you have many boxes, it’s fun to create different houses for each season; they can become part of your seasonal decor.

The hardest part of this project is keeping your cat out of the box while you work on it. Once the house is complete, your cat will spend endless hours enjoying their new home. You can’t buy a toy that will make your cat as happy as their box home will.
